Abstract
Numerical calculations have been performed which show the nature of energy coupling between an incident, two-dimensional Gaussian beam at small glancing angle onto the interface between a linear medium and a nonlinear diffusive medium, and a surface wave which can exist at the interface under certain conditions. The coupling is shown to be related to the boundary conditions at the interface that are imposed upon the diffusion equation governing the nonlinearity. This surface wave is postulated as the mechanism which causes the previously unexplained experimental result of ‘‘missing’’ energy in the partially transmissive state of the interface. Keywords
