The role of context stimuli in verbal learning.

Abstract
The cue value of a context stimulus not perfectly correlated with any single response during paired-associate learning was investigated. The subjects were instructed to learn verbal responses to 4 nonsense syllables. Two background colors were the context stimuli, each color being paired with 2 responses. Each color was found to have acquired discriminative status for the more frequently occurring response of the 2 associated with it. The results are interpreted as favoring an S-R reinforcement theory of discrimination learning.
