Abstract
We have used the tunneling microscope to characterize the adsorption of potassium on the Si(001)-2 X 1 surface. At submonolayer coverages, we have observed the formation of alkali metal chains that run perpendicular to the substrate dimer rows. At this coverage, the potassium atoms have been observed to adsorb onto a variety of different sites. At the saturation coverage of one monolayer, the alkali metal atoms become ordered, with the one-dimensional chains running parallel to the substrate dimer row direction. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
