Tribological phenomena at the head–disk interface of thin-film rigid disks

Abstract
The stiction/friction and contact start/stop tests of thin-film rigid disks were studied. The frictional phenomena observed in a variety of tests are correlated with the surface texturization, lubricant characteristics, and overcoat material. Among other issues, replenishment of lubricant, characterization of lubricant adhesion to surface of the disk, and the compatibility of lubricant with carbon overcoat are addressed. These experimental results showed clearly the highly interacting nature of the head–disk interface phenomena.
