DR. Waksman's letter, appearing elsewhere in this issue of the Journal, points to a problem in ethics the burden of which is increasing with the increase in clinical research. In this relation it is not so much the specific instance that is so important, although that appears clear cut enough, as it is the nagging question that seems still to remain unanswered to everyone's satisfaction — how far is it morally proper to go in using human beings for experimental purposes and under what conditions?The question is especially disturbing when it involves children who cannot speak for themselves and . . .
