Mentoring for Headteachers: a review of major issues

Abstract
As the School Management Task Force in the United Kingdom (UK) and other agencies look into the improvement of educational leadership, it becomes increasingly clear that strategies must be devised to provide support to beginning headteachers. In addition, it is suggested that an important part of such schemes should be the inclusion of a mentoring component wherein a more experienced headteacher is able to give guidance and information to a less experienced colleague. This article provides an overview and description of some of the major issues that are associated with the implementation of effective mentoring schemes designed to support educational leaders. The information provided is based on the authors' considerable experience with the development of mentoring programs for practicing and aspiring school principals in the USA in recent years. It is noted that, while significant differences exist both practically and philosophically regarding educational management in the USA and the UK, the use of mentoring may be seen as an effective practice in both settings.
