Abstract
The behavior of the spin configuration of easy-axis and biaxial antiferromagnets in an arbitrarily directed magnetic field is considered. The earlier observed field dependence of the susceptibility of polycrystalline alpha oxygen can be explained as a result of competition between two spin-flip mechanisms which are effective at different orientations of the crystal in various field strengths. The critical spin-flop field has been found to be in the range 65–70 Oe.
