A Simple Method for the Production of Anuria in Mice.

Abstract
Penile ligation (PL) was compared with bilateral nephrectomy (BLN) in adult male mice as methods of producing anuria. PL and BLN prepared mice were shown to exhibit essentially identical survival patterns over a 36 hr. period. The median lethal time for death was 26.5 hr. in both groups. Anuria was completed 2 hr. after PL at which time there was no excretion of phenolsulfophthalein (PSP) although PSP was excreted when administered with PL. Digitoxin, normally excreted via the urine in mice, effected the same degree of lethality in PL and BLN prepared animals when administered in-traperitoneally in dosages of 1.25 or 2.5 mg/kg (non-fatal to sham operated mice). PL effected a state of anuria which is indistinguishable from BLN anuria with respect to survival of anuric mice and enhanced lethality, when treated with digitoxin.
