Absence of Protective Action of Rutin in Anaphylactic and Histamine Shock

Abstract
It is reported that protection is obtained when sensitized guinea pigs are pretreated with rutin prior to shocking with antigen; there is no protection by rutin against histamine shock. These expts. were repeated. One group of guinea was carried through the procedures descr. by Raiman et al (Science, Oct. 17, 1947) except that the rutin injns. were intraperit. A 2d group received larger doses of rutin. The chief results were severe or fatal anaphylaxis. In a later expt. pigs were sensitized by a multiple-site intramusc. injn. of 0.4 cc. of a suspension of Freund adjuvant in egg white. Rutin was increased to 10 mg (total dose). The variable introduced was the time interval between the rutin injn. and the shocking dose of antigen. No protection was obtained. In a 3d expt. animals were pretreated with 10 mg. of rutin before shocking with histamine (0.4 mg./kg.). The interval between rutin and histamine was varied between 5 and 45 min. No protection was obtained.
