Abstract
If families are to be strengthened they should not only be viewed as means to societal ends (such as economic and social stability) but also their well-being should be recognized as a valied end in its own right. Interdependence should characterize optimal family-society relations. Society should be built on the values of community, mutual aid, cooperation, reduction of alienation, shared responsibility, human development, and Competent Society. This article explores the rationale for such a paradigm shift, identifies structural and professional barriers that would need to be addressed, and concludes with a number of recommendations.
