Abstract
A numerical flow model is developed to predict the flow characteristics on rough slopes for specified, normally incident wave trains. The finiteamplitude shallow‐water equations including the effects of bottom friction are solved numerically in the time domain using an explicit dissipative Lax‐Wendroff finite‐difference method. The effects of permeability are assumed to be negligible, so that the flow computation may be limited to the region on a rough slope. The reflected wave at the toe of the slope is computed approximately from the receding characteristics originating from the region on the slope. Wave run‐up is predicted from the computed movement of the instantaneous waterline on the slope. The developed numerical model is shown to be in agreement with available data on wave run‐up and reflection coefficients, although more extensive calibration and verification of the numerical model is required. Keywords
