Abstract
Four factors were found in a national sample of older black Americans that contributed significantly to their unretired-retired status: an indistinct line between lifetime and old age work patterns, a realization that occasional work is necessary well into old age, income from other than private pensions, and the greater benefits that accrue from identifying as disabled rather than retired. Keywords
