Abstract
An electromyographic study was made of internal intercostal, rectus abdominis and external intercostal muscles of 12 normal male nonathlete undergraduates. The action potential record showed an onset sequence pattern with the internal intercostals followed by the rectus abdominis and then the external intercostals. This pattern was maintained in spite of changes in speech material and rate of utterance. Lack of potential activity from the external intercostal muscles at termination of the phonation suggested that this arresting action may depend upon other muscle activity. Keywords
