This review with 172 references discusses perception of pitch; perception of loudness, including temporal integration, scaling, tolerance, threshold, clinical studies, temporary threshold shift, and masking; middle-ear sound transmission, including ossicular displacement and middle-ear muscles; cochlear mechanics, including initiation of AC potentials; anatomy, including the Organ of Corti, innervation, and blood supply; inner ear fluids, including chemical constituents and circulation, mechanical factors, metabolic processes; and, hearing in animals.
