Abstract
Testicular homogenates from mice of 8, 15, 20, 25, 35, 70 and 80 days of age were incubated with 3H-progesterone in the presence of NADPH. At 8 and 35–80 days of age, themajor metabolites of progesterone were testosterone and androstenedione. Formation of these two compounds decreased at 15, 20 and 25 days. Conversely, 5α-reduced Cli(-steroids such as androsterone, 3β-hydroxy-5α-androstan-17-one, 5αandrostane- 3β,17β-diol and 17β-hydroxy-5α-androstan- 3-one, which ere barely detectable in testicular tissue of 8-day-old mice gradually increased to a peak by age20–25 days, and then declined tobarely detectable levels by age 70–80 days. Similarly, relatively high formation of 5α-reduced metabolites of progesterone and 17α-hydroxypregn-4- ene-3,20-dione was demonstrated in 20- and 25-day-old mice testes, but these 5α-reduced steroids were not present or very low at 8, 15, 70 and 80 days of age.
