Abstract
Encapsulated structures composed of sheets of squamous cells adjacent to axons and small nerves were found close to the medial surface of the mandible over the area of the insertion of the pterygomandibular raphe in nine of 14 mandibles examined. All of the patients had had mandibulectomy for some type of carcinoma. These structures are not neoplastic but may easily be misinterpreted as such. Their exact nature is unknown, but it seems likely that these are sensory nerve endings with squamous metaplasia of Schwann cells. Keywords
