Abstract
A total of 212 separate dry fecal smears of bats were collected below a Heliconia leaf in Costa Rica. The seeds were identified as consisting mainly (99%) of Piper auritum. Seeds planted in a greenhouse produced some seedlings. These seeds remain viable for long periods and can be distributed widely by eventually being washed into streams and rivers. Bats may be attracted to the fruits by the characteristic anise odor.
