Transfer of illusion decrement as a function of perceived similarity.

Abstract
15 undergraduate Ss scaled varieties of the Muller-Lyer illusion for perceived similarity to the standard Muller-Lyer configuration. 5 variants differing in scaled similarity were pretested for illusion magnitude. All 50 Ss then received practice with the standard configuration during which illusion decrement was obtained. This was followed by a posttest on the initially tested variant. Transfer of decrement was monotonically related to perceived similarity. Data indicate central processing components in the Muller-Lyer illusion.
