Abstract
The method of measuring ground state electron momentum density through the Doppler broadening of Compton scattered radiation is reviewed. The representation of electron density in terms of momentum rather than position is carefully explained with regard to atomic, molecular and solid state behaviour. Next the Compton scattering cross-section is compared with the other competing scattering processes and the experimental method is outlined. Finally, the scope and limitations of the technique, as revealed by recent work, are discussed and contrasted with established methods of probing electron density distributions. Keywords
