Abstract
Seizure frequency, seizure type and the associated presence of learning disabilities contribute to the heightened psychiatric risk noted in childhood epilepsy. Each of these factors demands some modification in the treatment program. Psychoeducational components of traditional psychodynamic therapy are highlighted; stress reduction programs need to be implemented and ongoing grief work for child and family managed. Specific educational plans for the treatment of learning disabilities should be formulated in order to decrease their impact on the child’s self-esteem. Where learning disabilities and attentional disorders coexist, both stimulant medication and behavior modification techniques are warranted. Keywords
