COMPARATIVE STUDY OF HEAF AND MANTOUX TESTS

Abstract
A group of 327 patients and employees in a county infirmary and 211 inmates of a school for delinquent boys were tested with a PPD [purified protein derivative] 5 TU [tuberculin unit] Mantoux on 1 arm and the Heaf with the Sterneedle apparatus on the other. There were 40% of reactors to the Mantoux and 64% to the Heaf. No reasonable agreement could be obtained between the 2 tests by adjusting the point of separation between positive and negative reactions. There were also quantitative differences between the 2 methods of Heaf testing, the "cap-dip" and the smear method of distribution of tuberculin on the skin.
