Ophthalmology in Kenya

Abstract
This article on eye care in Kenya has been preceded by several excellent articles in this series describing the state of ophthalmology in countries other than the United States. These articles have generally described conditions in technologically advanced countries, and their emphasis has been on the typical fees for various ophthalmic services and the existing structures for payment and on the use of soft lenses, lens implants, laser therapy, and other types of treatment based on advanced technology. Kenya is so different from the developed countries that I would like first to portray briefly some of the basic realities of life in Kenya compared with the United States, next to describe the development of resources for eye care in the country and look at the system for eye care provision, and finally to discuss the major eye health problems in the country.
