Screening for Bronchogenic Carcinoma

Abstract
Early detection of bronchogenic carcinoma is important in the care of patients over the age of 45 years who smoke more than one half package of cigarettes per day (1-3). Morbidity and mortality resulting from the failure to diagnose and treat this disease effectively are a major problem. Bronchogenic carcinoma was estimated (4) to have occurred in 139 000 Americans in 1984; 85 000 men and 36 000 women died of the disease. These deaths accounted for 35% of all cancer deaths among men and 18% of those among women. Five-year survival after surgical therapy for bronchogenic carcinoma is known
