Abstract
Gastrografin (meglumine diatrizoate) was administered orally to 12 patients undergoing routine upper gastrointestinal radiologic investigation in order to assess the hematologic and biochemical changes related to its ingestion. Eight patients received an undiluted dose (120-180 ml), while four patients received a 50% dilution of Gastrografin and water. Certain of the biochemical and hematologic values studied showed significant changes (i.e., total protein, calcium, cholesterol, uric acid, hemoglobin, and hematocrit) increasing in all of the patients after oral administration. The hemoglobin increased up to 10% and the hematocrit up to 11% of their original value. Caution in the use of Gastrografin, therefore, is advised especially in infants and adult patients who are dehydrated. Correction of dehydration is recommended prior to and during its administration. Keywords
