Abstract
The philosophy behind the development of a new air/steam blown fluidised bed gasitier, which is capable of producing synthesis gas from low grade coal, is briefly discussed. Of vital importance to this project is a knowledge of the kinetics of steam gasification of local coal resources. A microreactor is described which has been developed to measure char-steam gasification kinetics under conditions which simulate the behaviour of char in the fluidised bed gasilier. Kinetic data acquired to data agree well with the predictions of the correlations of Walker et al. (1977) and of Johnson (1979).
