Abstract
The 1990 version of the "doctornurse game" as described by Stein et al. (Feb. 22 issue)* indicates a lack of awareness of changes in the health care system, as well as in professional nursing. No nurse would expect a doctor to extend a patient's stay for a meeting; the requirements of diagnosis-related groups and utilization review prohibit such a luxury. In addition, competent nurses incorporate into their nursing care plans methods of dealing with the fears and concerns expressed by patients about to have surgical procedures. Before the operation, such nurses assess their patients' needs for education and counseling about potential factors inhibiting recovery, and they initiate appropriate plans of action. Under circumstances that prohibit interdependent practice, nurses will and do seek a more suitable work environment and let the doctors provide the nursing care. Keywords
