THIS review is designed to put into perspective the present multidisciplined approach to the problem of alcoholism. Emphasis is placed on trends and their development rather than on details. The reason for this design is twofold: several excellent medical reviews are already available,1 , 2 to which nothing important can be added; and, more significantly, despite the important medical aspects of the problem of alcoholism, a study of the historical development of trends and attitudes reveals that alcoholism is by no means only a medical problem.
