Abstract
201 strains of Salmonella typhi isolated from patients and contacts of the Zermatt typhoid outbreak were phage-typed. 198 strains belonged to phage-type E1a, and three were not typable. 60 additional strains isolated from Italian workers in Switzerland ill with typhoid-fever belonged to phage-type A (13), B2 (1), C1 (37), D1 (4), E1a (3), F1 (1), one was not typable. Most of these Italians were infected during their first return to Italy, probably, since their level of acquired immunity had decreased in a typhoid-free environment.
