Heterotopic Brain Tissue (Heterotopic Neural Rest)

Abstract
A midline cutaneous lesion on the parietal scalp of an infant was studied. The lesion was excised, and the pathology was that of heterotopic brain tissue. Clinical aspects, histopathology, and pathogenesis of this unique condition are discussed. A review of the dermatologic conditions which were considered in differential diagnosis is presented, as well as a thorough review of the various cutaneous abnormalities which may occur as a result of malformations (such as sinuses and cysts) and neoplasms of the central nervous system and its coverings.
