Survival of algae in a desiccated soil

Abstract
In 1958 a sample of soil was collected from a cornfield in Storrs, Connecticut, dried, and stored in the laboratory. After one year, half-gram and gram samples were incubated in a variety of media at various temperatures under several light conditions. Twenty-three organisms were initially listed from the one sample (Hilton and Trainor, 1963), but with further exploratory work the number was increased to 30 (in 17 genera). In 1968 half-gram samples of the soil were again incubated in several media; 11 organisms (in 9 genera) survived desiccation for the ten years.
