Abstract
Morphological and anatomical variation exhibited by Colpomenia in Australia has been studied using a hybrid index method and by analysis of variance. Some of the characteristics commonly used to distinguish the species are found to be variable and provide no basis for taxonomic discrimination. Only two characteristics effectively separate the species, Colpomenia peregrina (Sauvageau) Hamel and Colpomenia sinuosa (Roth) Derbes & Solier. These characteristics are the shape of the sori and the presence of a cuticle on the plurilocular sporangia. Keywords
