Abstract
Current environmental and economic forces in health care delivery systems have dramatically influenced the practice of nursing administration. The concept of human care is presented as a basis for nursing leadership and management. Philosophical trends that impact the role of the nurse administrator are explored, with specific reference to the evolution of the concept of care as a central domain in nursing practice. Nursing administrators are urged to maintain and enhance the human caring values inherent in professional nursing practice. Keywords
