Abstract
One of the major complications associated with the use of medical devices and implants is foreign body associated infection. Its significance in modern medicine and its pathogenesis are discussed. Adherence to and colonization of a foreign body material and the interference of microbial products with the host defence are critical steps leading to foreign body infections. Therapy is difficult and hence the immediate administration of antibiotics and the removal of an infected device or implant is still preferred. New strategies for the prevention of foreign body infections are briefly introduced. Keywords
