Phytal Meiofauna from the Rocky Intertidal at Murrells Inlet, South Carolina

Abstract
In Aug. 1982, meiofauna were collected from 4 attached macroalgal species on a man-made jetty at Murrells Inlet, South Carolina. The samples were dominated by juvenile mussels (temporary meiofauna). The permanent meiofauna were dominated by harpacticoid copepods, in this respect not unlike phytal assemblages elsewhere in the world. From a set of quantitative samples 13 harpacticoid species and 23 nematode taxa were identified. In Sept., qualitative samples from the same area had a similar harpacticoid species but the abundance rankings were different. A summary table of known quantitative phytal meiofauna studies is provided. This is the 1st study of North American phytal meiofauna.
