Abstract
This paper presents a classification of present Papago settlement pattern. Farms, pastures, homesteads, ranches, and two types of villages are described. In the past, the Papago Indians migrated seasonally between two villages; one was located in the mountains and the other was located in the plain. The most drastic change has been the establishment of permanent residence in one or the other village. It is argued that this change was accompanied by changes in the economy. From the late 19th century to the present there has been increased participation in a cash economy and less involvement in subsistence activities. Keywords
