Abstract
Four strains of C. neoformans one of which gave rise to a highly mucoid variant, were isolated from soil by inoculation of mice with soil samples. These strains were compared with 3 strains from human cryptococcosis and with the original Sanfelice strain. They are typical, showing the range of variation in color, encapsulation and acid formation characteristic of the species. All soil strains produced acid in glucose, levulose, mannose and sucrose. Acid production in maltose and starch was erratic. None produced gas. All strains were virulent for mice.
