Abstract
A simplified model of the human speech has been developed. This model indicates that a malfunction of the middle ear, a variable gain device, is a possible cause of stuttering. Computer models have been developed to verify the mathematical analysis. In isolating the middle ear as a possible cause of stuttering, investigators now have a specific area on which to focus their attention in trying to solve this problem. More work should be done in this area to find new methods with which the stuttering problem can be treated and corrected. Keywords
