Abstract
With special, but not exclusive, emphasis on contributions made by scientists within the United States, we review scientific progress made in understanding the character and operation of macroscopic, earth magnetospheric electric fields and electric currents within the time frame 1983 to 1986, inclusive. Our review of this extremely broad area is strongly constrained by overlap with related reports in this issue. The related reports cover the aurora, ionospheric electrodynamic phenomena, the magnetopause, the magnetotail, the ring current, and magnetic field models. Our emphasis will be on the interior regions of the magnetosphere and on the boundary region results that emphasize connection to the interior regions. Keywords
