Induction of Phagocytic Activity in Immature Leukemic Granulocytes by Dibromomannitol

Abstract
In vitro studies were performed to evaluate the effects of dibromomannitol (DBM) on the bactericidal activity of immature granulocytes from patients with acute myeloblasts leukemia. Incubation experiments coupled with phase contrast, scanning beam, and transmission electron microscopy confirmed the surface collection and the ingestion of bacteria by DBM stimulated immature leukemic granulocytes. Our evidence suggests that DBM may act directly upon immature granulocytes to induce phagocytosis and make them capable of digesting the ingested organisms.
