Abstract
The circular muscle strip of the isolated ileum of the guinea-pig, treated with the anticholinesterase mipafox (100 μg/ml) responds to doses of methacholine or carbachol with contractions that are inhibited by previous doses of noradrenaline, adrenaline or isoprenaline in that order of potency. Piperoxane antagonised the inhibitory action of adrenaline, but not that of aminophylline. Dichloroisoprenaline did not antagonise the action of adrenaline on the circular muscle strip. It is concluded that the site of action of the sympathomimetic amines on the circular muscle of the guinea-pig ileum is located at postganglionic neuro-effector junctions in the smooth muscle.
