Abstract
A rotating-anvil shear press was used to measure the friction coefficient and shear strength of thin layers of polyethylene at room temperature in the pressure range up to 4 kbar. A significant linear increase in shear strength with pressure was observed. The friction coefficient was observed to drop rapidly, approaching a small asymptotic value at high loads. Deformation of polyethylene under pressure was found to produce a permanent densification.
