Abstract
Fifteen overweight patients, aged 19–65 years, have been treated by total starvation for 2–9 weeks. In six patients urinary protein patterns of tubular type were found as shown by paper electrophoresis and gel filtration, accompanied by increased excretion of ribonuclease. In two cases, followed weekly, potassium substitution therapy normalized the tubular patterns. The results indicate that starvation induces a reversible tubular protein‐uria, probably secondary to potassium deficit. Plasma renin activity in the three patients studied showed varying changes during and increased values after the starvation period in two of them. This publication has 19 references indexed in Scilit:
