Abstract
Measurements of the 238U( gamma , alpha ) cross section do not confirm previous estimates of this cross section and establish an upper limit lower by a factor of 30. The possibility of a background contribution to the original experiment, through the reaction 238U(n, alpha n'), is investigated and shown to be negligible. Keywords
