Extrahepatic portal vein obstruction in childhood is an important, well-defined, angiographic entity, often referred to by the term "cavernomatous transformation of the portal vein." Clinically, it first appears during childhood, with the various manifestations of Banti‘s syndrome, especially splenomegaly and gastrointestinal bleeding. Splenoportography and celiac and superior mesenteric arteniography are the decisive procedures in its diagnosis. The angiographic findings in 38 patients with extrahepatic portal obstruction are summarized and the role of individual angiographic procedures is discussed.
