Abstract
Adaptation of an orbital bleeding procedure to rapid, serial blood sampling of mice and other small laboratory animals has been made. Blood (0.2 ml) is collected in a disposable, heparinized micropipette by rupturing the fragile ophthalmic venous plexus with the tip of the blood collection tube. The tube may be sealed and centrlfuged for hematocrit determination and plasma separation for enzyme or other biochemical studies. The bleeding procedure for a single mouse requires less than 30 sec, and 100 mice can be bled and processed by a single technician in about an hour and a half. Appropriate illustrations demonstrate the technical details of the procedure. Keywords
