Abstract
Much in the same way as thousands of pharmacological uses have been found for plants and herbs that were used by witchdoctors and guerisseurs, the ritual kinetic trance existing in primitive Afro-Brazilian spiritual sects may be used therapeutically. Terpsichoretrancetherapy (TTT) systematically employs the same kind of trance to the sound of the same music. Both under TTT and during a ritual possession, the subject undergoes regression. However, the regression which occurs during ritual possession is more profound: it reaches more primitive, archaic levels, presenting characteristics that may well be considered atavistic regression. No pattern of behavior is suggested to patients either before or during TTT; no oral communication is established. TTT in and of itself does not involve the discussion of the patient's problems, either before or immediately following the s& eacute;anee. However, TTT is employed as a tool in the total therapy procedure. Guidance and support given in prior and subsequent psychotherapy sessions, as well as adequate medication, are necessary parts of the total treatment program. Keywords
