Basidiospore Germination of Calvatia gigantea

Abstract
The role that Rhodotorula mucilaginosa (Jorg) Harrison var. sanguinea played in enhancing germination of the basidiospores of Calvatia gigantea was investigated in order to determine if this yeast removes an inhibitor or provides a stimulator in the medium. Many cell-free extracts were tried, but none replaced the yeast as a stimulator. This may be due to the instability of the stimulator. Some spores germinated in a defined medium without the yeast while no spores germinated if malt extract was used in the absence of the yeast. Other sp. Rhodotorula also enhanced germination.
