Abstract
In this issue of the Journal, Regamey et al.1 provide evidence that human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) can be transmitted through a kidney transplant. Physicians must be ever aware of new hazards of transplantation. This is the latest entry in a large and growing list of microbial agents that can be transmitted through donated tissues or organs.2 The list involves some nonviral agents present in the donor organs that frequently cause local infection after transplantation.2 Common saprophytic bacteria and candida have been implicated, as well as less common agents, such as cryptococcus and tubercle bacillus.
