On the energetics of the γ-α phase transition in cerium metal: Determination of the atomic excitation fds2to d2s2

Abstract
From theoretical calculations it is deduced that the d2s2 atomic level in cerium lies 4.05+or-0.1 eV above the fds2 groundstate. The implication of this for the understanding of metallic cerium is briefly discussed.Keywords
