Random phase screens

Abstract
New models for phase screens are introduced. They are analogs of models well studied in critical phenomena. By adjustment of a suitable control parameter (the analog of temperature in critical phenomena) it is possible to have the nature of the randomness single scale or multiscale. Moreover, the statistics of the randomness are intrinsically non-Gaussian. The probability distribution of the intensity of light scattered from the phase screen is calculated analytically for models of the corrugated screen, special emphasis being given to features that are universal. For two-dimensional random phase variation, new results for the intensity distribution are calculated by using related Monte Carlo simulations.
